My husband had gastric bypass this last year. I wasn't for it, I wasn't against it. I love him fat or thin. My dh and I have been together for 15 years...he was heavy when we were married and honestly I never thought much about it.
Since our marraige he has tried to lose weight. He hated being overweight. He worked out for hours every day, he carefully monitored his food intake, he had metabolic workups done. I have never seen anyone so dedicated to losing weight or getting fit.
He comes from a family that is active, but obese. I have no idea why these people are overweight, they do a heck of a lot more things then I do.
He started Phen phen back in the day when that was popular, and was doing really well until they pulled him off it due to its possible complications. He was so mad. I can hear him now. "Hmm, shall I die of obesity related problems --diabetes--heart disease---ect, or should I die from Phen Phen, give me the phen phen."
Anyways, last year everything was finally in place for the surgery. He had a Roux en Y bypass. He is doing fantastic! One of the biggest problems that he had was that he had extremely large muscle mass, his fat composition was not super high. He is finally able to lose some muscle without it turning into fat. He is working out and maintaining as best as he can, but jeez, it has been since May and he has already lost close to 80 pounds!
I just want everyone to know, gastric bypass for some is the only answer and should be supported. I am proud of my husband. I have to tried to stay completely emotionally away from this as he needed all of the process to be his decision. I am just happy that he has a newfound energy and love of life he didn't have before. I loved him then, but I love him more now, as he is happier and not depressed.
